How to Choose The Right Career

Positioning is power. I learned this lesson early on when I noticed people got ahead, not because they were more talented, but because they had the right connections or were in the right industry.

While you can be successful at nearly anything, it’s important to choose a career that not only aligns with your skillsets, but also has growth opportunities. Here’s an obvious example, which industry do you think is going to grow more over the next ten years? AI or Newspapers? Obviously AI. So even if you’re an incredibly talented person, you’d likely get beat by someone who is less talented, but instead chose a growing field. Below I’m going to list three easy steps you can follow to make sure you choose the right path for YOU!

Step 1: Know Yourself

What are your natural skillsets? There’s a huge difference between liking something and being amazing at it. When you’re doing something you’re naturally great at, everything flows. This alone will supercharge your success.

Step 2: What Lifestyle Do You Want to Create?

The biggest mistake I see people making is choosing a career that is great financially but doesn’t align with their lifestyle. For example, making $250,000 a year is great but if traveling all over the world and being able to spend time with your kids is important. Then being a Doctor may not be the best choice. Instead, it would probably make more sense to get into the tech industry where a ton of people work fully remote.

Step 3: Positioning

Once you have figured out what industry you’d like to be in. It’s important to strategize how to get into it successfully. The first step is proximity. Where is the hub for the industry you’d like to be in? Where can you connect with people in that industry? This may mean moving across the country or simply just starting to go to conferences and events. My point is you need to get close. People win in life simply because they’re around the right people.

Next, your resume and experiences need to match who they typically hire as closely as possible. You’re goal should be to get in the door. Once you’re in, you can then make something happen.
